UCL - Manchester United vs Benfica predictions, betting tips and match preview

Manchester United vs Benfica predictions for their UEFA Champions League clash at Old Trafford on Tuesday. Man United won the reverse fixture 1-0.

A 4th straight UEFA Champions League Group A victory for Man United should clinch their place in the knockout phase when they face a Benfica side hoping to avoid defeat.

Man Utd have made an excellent job of gaining European wins with the minimum of fuss this season, conceding only one goal and scoring eight in despatching Basel, CSKA Moscow and Benfica.

It means that if United maintain their 100% record on Tuesday and CSKA Moscow fail to beat Basel in Switzerland, Jose Mourinho’s men would be through to the last 16 and could then seal top spot when they make the trip to St Jakob-Park in the third week of November.

Benfica were the club originally considered most likely to advance with the English side, but they have suffered a terrible campaign with three consecutive defeats including the nightmare of a 5-0 drubbing in Basel.

Last time out, they produced very little in the way of attacking threat against United and then created their own downfall when 18-year-old Belgian goalkeeper Mile Svilar committed footballing hari-kari by carrying the ball across his own goalline from a Marcus Rashford free-kick.

Just before the end, veteran Brazilian defender Luisao was sent off for his second bookable offense and he will be suspended for the journey to Old Trafford.

Benfica are now in the last-chance saloon as far as their qualification hopes are concerned and besides getting a result themselves in this match, they will need to hope CSKA Moscow can thwart 2nd-placed Basel.

Manchester United, the Europa League title holders, have been so solid at home under Jose Mourinho that it is difficult to envisage anything other than them winning again, with a routine success likely to be more than satisfactory in the build-up to their weekend match away to Chelsea.

If translated into a league for points per match against English opponents, Benfica have the second best record of the ‘big three’ Portuguese teams: 1.06 per match compared to Sporting Lisbon’s 1.33.
