Valencia vs. Barcelona predictions for Sunday’s La Liga clash at Estadio de Mestalla

Sunday’s prime-time slot sees the top 2 in the Spanish La Liga slug it out in a match that could see Barcelona extend their four-point lead and go 7 points clear at the top.
A revitalized Valencia will provide a stiff test for Ernesto Valverde’s team in what should be a pulsating encounter at a rocking Mestalla.

Both teams remain unbeaten this LaLiga season, nothing unusual perhaps for Barcelona. Valencia have been the surprise package this season following the appointment of Marcelo as coach in the summer.

Los Che have racked up a club-record 8 straight wins in the league after a start that saw them draw 3 out of the first 4. Goals have been a feature in those matches, with seven of those eight producing over 2.5 goals (36 total, average of 4.5 per match!). Only one of those matches saw Valencia concede a 1st-half goal and unsurprisingly they actually haven’t lost a first half all season!

Valencia have lost just the once in 14 La Liga matches playing at home, but against Barcelona their record isn’t so impressive, with no wins against them in the last 11 at the Mestalla in all competitions (D7, L4).
Coach Marcelino has no victories in 14 attempts (as coach of various teams) against the Catalan giants (D3, L11).

Valencia have been in great form in front of goal this La Liga season (32 goals), Barcelona have been even better. Barcelona have been putting teams to the sword all season and have amassed 33 goals at an average of 2.75 per match. At the other end of the pitch, only Atletico Madrid come close to their 4 conceded, who were incidentally Barcelona’s opponents when they dropped their only points this season in a 1-1 draw.

Lionel Messi can count Valencia as one of his favorite opponents – he has a few to be fair! But in total, Messi has scored 24 goals against them, with 11 assists. Messi has 8 in his last 4 against Valencia and actually scored his 500th career goal against them!
